This book asks you to take things you thought you learned about yourself, about hard work, and about your energy levels, and let some of those ideas go. It directly tackles the ways in which some of us have been taught to tie our worth and our value to what we accomplish, and asks us if that is fair, right, or just. The core of this book turns on "The Laziness Lie".

"The Laziness Lie" tells us that "hard work is morally superior to relaxation" and that "people who aren't productive have less innate value than productive people". It connects what we believe about ourselves, our co-workers, and the people around us to the systems of economy and work that have shaped some of those beliefs, and asks how much those beliefs really serve us. At its heart, this is a book about compassion, for yourself and for others, and encouraging people to let go of the constant urge to be productive, or at least look at where those urges might be coming from.
